Hiking and busing along the Jalisco coast

Stay south of Puerto Vallarta along the more remote coast toward Boca de Tomatlan. We chose a desolate Airbnb with stunning cliff views where the only transportation was local bus or by foot. If you choose to stay in Puerto Vallarta itself, we enjoyed the quieter inland area of Zona Romántica.

Eat at El Jacalito in Mismaloya if you’re anywhere south of the city — order the pan-fried fish here and a margarita. In Puerto Vallarta, get late night tacos at Taqueria Las Güeras, some of the best we’ve ever had. Don’t miss churros from The Churros Guy, we ordered more and more from him every day we went — but watch out because he runs out by late in the evening.

Hike south from Boca de Tomatlan to the beautiful Colomitos Cove. The beach is small but the hike is a great jaunt off the beaten path. Note you will either have to hike back or barter for a water taxi. For an even more remote hike, take the local bus to just north of Garza Blanca and find the well worn path inland to Cascada Palo Maria. Don’t miss a quiet beach afternoon on Playa Palmares, where we mixed with local families and couples and stay for hours without interruption from vendors.
