Hopping down the 101 from Cannon Beach to Manzanita

We tried to escape January in Seattle by driving south to the Oregon coast and renting a modern vacation home in the sleepy town of Manzanita.

After a late Friday night arrival, we slept in and then headed north to Cannon Beach for coffee and a morning walk down the expansive, California-like sand. I enjoyed the winter calmness of the otherwise bustling summer town.

The rest of the day was spent skirting down the coast, stopping every couple miles to get out and walk along whatever rocky shoreline was there. As sunset neared, we called in pizza from a pick-up-only joint in Manzanita, and headed to the nearby beach with a bottle of champagne and red plastic cups. There wasn't a sunset that night, but the cotton-candy purple and pink haze that ensued was a treat nonetheless.
