Farming and eating at The Farmer and the Cook, Ojai, CA

Camp at Lake Casitas Campground – a simple campground spot easy for sleeping in your car and waking up to a beautiful lakeside view. You’ll be close to Ojai and the coast from here.

Volunteer in the mornings at Steve Sprinkel's organic farm, Rancho del Pueblo. Make sure to email him first so he knows to expect you. You’ll learn more about Organic farming in a day than you thought possible. Help weed carrots and pick for their CSA boxes if you go in March.

Eat at The Farmer and the Cook, run by Olivia (Steve’s wife) and sourced with produce from the farm. Munch on the most epic salad bar (soup on the salad is a local trick) and grab one of their to-die-for smoothies (erm milkshakes). This all vegetarian, Mexican-vibed restaurant will keep you coming back each day. If you’re a Patagonia fanatic, you’re likely to meet some of their core ambassadors at this local jaunt as well.

Surf at Rincon or C Street – lessons are easy to book if you’re a nube. Don’t miss the Patagonia flagship store in Ventura. If it’s not too hot, ask anyone at The Farmer and the Cook for a day hike recommendation around Ojai as well.
